Blue or Navy Leather Wallet? Ten Blue Pieces in Vegetable Tanned Leather

Escuyer navy blue leather card sleeve holding cards and a folded banknote

Blue is what you choose when black feels like a default and brown feels like your father's wallet. It is just as easy to wear as either, goes with everything from denim to a grey suit, and still says you picked it.

We make it in three shades, a mid blue, a navy and a two-tone marine, and it turns up as the second colour on some of our best two-tone pieces. Here is the whole range, and how to choose between them.

Every blue piece in one place

Ten pieces across six models, from the €25 keychain to the two-tone Billfolds.

Blue

Our standard blue is a clear mid blue, brighter than navy and darker than denim, the colour of a good work jacket. It is confident without being loud, and it looks particularly good as the leather darkens and the blue deepens with it. It comes on the Cardholder, Slim Wallet, Zip Wallet and Keychain, and as the outside of the Blue and Cognac Billfold, where it opens onto a cognac lining.

Navy and marine

Navy is the darkest blue we make, close to black in low light and unmistakably blue in daylight. It is on the Card Sleeve, our thinnest piece. The Marine and Navy Slim Wallet puts two blues side by side, a slightly lighter marine against navy, for a two-tone that stays quiet.

Blue with black and khaki

Blue is the colour we reach for most as a second tone. The Black and Blue Billfold is black on the outside and blue inside, so the colour is only for you. The Blue and Khaki Cardholder splits the two across the front, and the Black and Dark Blue MacBook Sleeve does the same for a laptop.

How the leather ages

Blue vegetable tanned leather ages quietly. The surface takes on a sheen, the corners soften, and the blue deepens a tone or two towards navy over the first year. Navy itself stays close to how it started, just glossier. Because the dye goes through the hide, the colour does not rub off on the edges the way a painted blue does.

Every piece is cut from Italian vegetable tanned leather from the Tempesti tannery in Tuscany, then stitched and finished by hand in a single atelier near Braga, in the north of Portugal. The edges are painted by hand, the logo is stamped in gold, and every wallet arrives in a presentation box. We design everything in Brussels.

Which blue to choose

If you want a wallet for a suit. Navy, in the Card Sleeve, or the Black and Blue Billfold. Both read as black until they are opened.

If you want the blue to show. The mid blue Slim Wallet or Zip Wallet. The Zip Wallet in blue is a favourite with people who carry coins.

If you cannot decide between blue and brown. The Blue and Cognac Billfold is both, and the two colours age together.

If it is a gift. Blue is the safest colour we make after black: the Cardholder at €75 suits almost anyone, and comes in a presentation box.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between blue and navy leather?

Our blue is a clear mid blue, brighter than navy and darker than denim. Navy is much darker, close to black in low light. Blue is on the Cardholder, Slim Wallet, Zip Wallet and Keychain; navy is on the Card Sleeve and, paired with marine, on the Slim Wallet.

Does blue leather age well?

Yes. Blue vegetable tanned leather deepens a tone or two over the first year and takes on a soft sheen where it is handled. The dye goes through the hide, so it does not wear off at the edges.

Is a blue wallet suitable for work?

A navy one is: in low light it reads as black and only shows its colour up close. The Navy Card Sleeve and the Black and Blue Billfold are the two we recommend for a suit.

Do you make a blue wallet with coin space?

Yes. The Zip Wallet in blue zips on three sides and has an open compartment for coins and notes with a card slot inside. It measures 12.5 by 9 cm.

Which blue leather goods make a good gift?

The Cardholder in blue at €75 is the safest choice: it is unisex, slim, and arrives in a presentation box. The Keychain in blue at €25 makes a good small gift or a match for a wallet.

Escuyer. Considered design, made to last.
